Show Editorial New Initiatives at Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology: Highlighting Technology, Social Media, and Content for Trainees Vivek R. Patel, MD, Prem S. Subramanian, MD, PhD, Elizabeth Fortin, MD, Andrew R. Carey, MD, for the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology TechnologyBased Content Team T he Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology (JNO) editorial board has developed innovative strategies to expand the journal's scope, relevance, and value to today's reader, recognizing that contemporary neuro-ophthalmology integrates technology into every aspect of our daily professional lives. Most clinicians now use electronic medical records, whether in private or institution-based practices, and telemedicine will likely continue to be a component of our clinical efforts in the years to come after the pandemic-related surge (Melissa Ko will cover this in a separate editorial). In response, we have created opportunities for contributors to share their experiences with the readership, lending insights regarding efficient and effective incorporation of these modalities into their workflow. We have expanded our web-based footprint, providing new avenues to deliver more content without increasing the size and costs associated with the quarterly print edition. We welcome instructional videos highlighting examination or surgical techniques, as well as reports of unique or interesting clinical findings that will enhance the experience and education of residents and fellows in neuro-ophthalmology. Teaching quizzes associated with media content may be worthwhile contributions and a great fit for this section. Multidisciplinary contributions from other subspecialists in ophthalmology and neurology and from allied fields such as otolaryngology and neurosurgery would further expand this experience base. We recognize the future of our subspecialty lies with our current trainees and junior members; hence, we are dedicated to providing valuable content that meets their needs and interests. Sharing insights and information has been revolutionized by the explosion of social media. Our social media team has been working to increase the JNO's online presence through social media platforms, such as Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Journal-of-Neuro-Ophthalmology-296572064377909/), Twitter, and Instagram (both @JournalNeuroOph). We aim to highlight key articles from the most recent JNO edition through the use of visual abstracts, conveying the most important findings in a concise and visually attractive manner. Thus far, we have increased social media disbursement 7-fold; for the month of April 2020, we saw a 7% rise in Twitter followers and created 11,800 Twitter impressions, averaging almost 1,500 impressions per tweet. Our goals over the next year are to further strengthen this presence as well as increase online engagement to drive more traffic to the JNO and increase visibility of your publications. To this end, we are collaborating with other teams at JNO, including the development of a new literature commentary podcast. We plan to roll out Facebook and Twitter polls to better gain your feedback regarding the types of content you find most enjoyable and share ideas for potential new directions. Current suggestions include author interviews, online journal clubs (live or asynchronous through Twitter), and cases highlighting diagnostic or management challenges. Thank you for your engagement and help in expanding the scope and utility of our journal. We welcome any feedback or suggestions you may have.
