I also feel an introduction to the topic itself is necessary. My novel centers around the British military expedition to the French island of Rhe in 1627. This expedition was a fiasco and was, indirectly, a factor contributing to the English Civil War. However, since my novel, presented here in rough draft form, is a literary work and not a history, I have altered historical fact quite often for thematic purposes. For instance, Edward Cecil was not, to the best of my knowledge, one of the Duke of Buckingham's advisors on Rhe, nor did John Pennington take part in the expedition. I have made these and other fabrications with a clear conscience in the belief that an author in the process of creating a work of art owes nothing, either to history or to fact. |
