Utah finished the first day with senior Alyssa Abbott and sophomore Amanda Mergaert qualifying for the final round in the 1500m race. In the 1500 race, Mergaert led the way with a time of 4:23.02 (second-best time of her career) which earned her eighth-place overall (third in her heat). In the final 80m of the race, Abbott was in seventh-place and made a final surge to finish in the top-five of her heat so that she could qualify for the final round. Abbott finished fifth in her heat (22nd overall) with a time of 4:24.54. Both athletes qualified and will compete in the final round on Saturday. In the 800m, junior Lucy Yates posted a time of 2:09.39 which earned her 34th-place overall. Her time failed to qualify for the final round of the event. Junior Brianna LeRoy hit the second-best mark of her career with a 19-4 in the women's long jump. LeRoy entered the day seeded 40th in the long jump and she ended the event in 21st place. In her first career appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, Kaplar competed in the 100m hurdles where she had a strong start through five hurdles. In the final half of the race, Angela Kaplar seemed to tighten up and she finished seventh in her heat (42nd overall). In the hammer throw, Anneli Stahl opened up the event with a first-throw of 175-0. In her final two attempts, she was unable to increase her mark and did not qualify for the final round. Stahl finished the event 34th overall. Final day: sophomore Amanda Mergaert earned the top 1500m qualifying time from the West Regionals in the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. The Shelby Township, Mich., native, broke the school record and qualified for her first career NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance. In the 1500m race, Mergaert gained the spotlight with a school-record time of 4:16.57, which broke her previous personal record by more than five seconds. Mergaert's effort earned her first place in the event as well as the top qualifying time overall from both regionals for the NCAA Championships. Her time also met the "B standard" for the U.S Championships held on June 23. In her final race as a Ute, senior Alyssa Abbott competed in the 1500m and was slowed down by an athlete that fell down in the final 300m of the race. Abbott finished the event with a time of 4:28.07 (22nd place). In the high jump, wet weather conditions affected all of the athletes that competed. Brianna LeRoy led the way for the Utes with a jump of 5-7, which earned her 16th place. Junior Langley Iverson finished 24th overall clearing the mark of 5-5. The overall winner of the event was Arizona's Brigetta Barrett with a jump of 5-8.75. Mergaert will represent the Utes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 8 in Des Moines, Iowa. |
