Description Standing as a monument to the faith and courage of early Utah pioneer iron makers is this hand-made coke oven, located in the hills west of Cedar City in the very shadow of today's modern, open-pit iron mining operations. Nearby, are the remains of primitive furnaces used to make the first iron ever produced in Utah. Economic, environmental and raw material difficulties proved too much for the brave iron settlers and early efforts to make iron ultimately failed. Irontown, Utah
