Show A group of ten women (presumably teachers) posing outdoors with various cleaning items. Most of the women hold a respective cleaning article such as brooms, dustpans, and mops. One woman sits in a wheelbarrow while another hoists the wheelbarrow off the ground as if meaning to push her in it. There is a metal wash basin another woman sits in while holding a broom horizontally in front of her. All of the women are dressed in light or semi-dark colored clothing underneath aprons. The nurse on the far right wears a dark colored skirt with a light colored blouse and appears not to be wearing an apron. The women wear there hair on top of their heads. The women stand in front of a light colored brick building with a window directly behind them. On the far right is an open yard or field with trees that stand in a uniform row. The foreground is grass until where the women are standing. Here the grass appears to have been worn away to dirt. |
Further Information |
The photograph is in good condition. The corners have slight creases with the edges being worn. The photograph does show signs of discoloration due to age. Written on the back side in black ink is the following: "Wasatch Academy teachers chasing dirt." Written in pencil is the following; "Mt. Pleasant [,] D - 4." There is no other information of who the teachers are or when and where the photograph was taken. Wasatch Academy was founded on April 19, 1875 by the Reverend Duncan James McMillan whom also had a major influence in founding Westminster College. A protégé of Sheldon Jackson, he came to the Salt Lake Valley in March of 1875 to find refuge from his bronchial condition and to establish a proselytizing mission to convert Mormons. However, McMillan soon turned his efforts to education when his proselytizing efforts towards the Mormons proved futile. He then founded Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah and opened a number of subsequent schools of the same nature in northern and southern Utah. |
