Additional Information |
Heber J. Grant (1856-1945) was the seventh President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1918 until his death. On Nov. 23, 1938, his business associates held a banquet in the Hotel Utah's Lafayette Ballroom to celebrate his 82nd birthday. The Hotel Utah was built in 1909 - 1911, with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the primary stockholder. After 76 years as Salt Lake City's premiere hotel, it closed in 1987 and was converted into church office space. It was renamed the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in 1993. Parts of it are open to the public, including the Lafayette ballroom, which is still used for special events |
