Japanese in Utah

Caption: My father is on the extreme right with his arm around one of the Japanese baseball players. I do not know who the other Japanese are. This snapshot was taken at the Tooele Japanese Smelter Camp some miles away from the city proper about 1917. My father who was the camp "boss" organized a baseball team as he loved the sport as a recreational activity for the camp. At the peak of the working season, there were several hundred Isseis in the camp -- many of them or most of them single and with time hanging heavily on their hands. Dad had pool tables set up for them and arranged to have Japanese musicians or performers come in from Salt Lake City who were touring in the area to entertain the men. The baseball team managed by my father would play Caucasian teams in the local area.
