Collection Inventory +/-Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-Dr. Burton C.J. Wheatlake was a member of the Westminster College Board of Trustees for 35 years, and Interim President of the college in 1952 between the terms of President Robert D. Steele and President J. Richard Palmer. In 1998, Burton K. Wheatlake established the Dr. Burton C.J. Wheatlake Endowed Scholarship at Westminster College in memory of his father. Content Description +/-This collection contains internal memoranda, and incoming and outgoing correspondence from the office of B.C.J. Wheatlake, Interim President of Westminster College in 1952. After Robert Steele's resignation, Wheatlake agreed to serve as interim president until the position could be filled. All of the correspondence relates directly to this search for a new president. The correspondence includes letters of introduction from presidential hopefuls and also applicants' letters of recommendation. The Board of Trustees consulted various Methodist and Presbyterian officials and ultimately selected Reverend J. Richard Palmer as Westminster College's sixth president. The first folder contains memos written by President Wheatlake concerning potential presidential candidates. These memoes may be notes from an interview process. The third party correspondence files contain letters to Mr. John M. Wallace, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Head of the Presidential Selection Committee. Also included in the files are letters to President Robert Steele, previous president of the college. Significant dates within these files are as follows:
