Description A positive self-concept is a valuable asset because the view a person holds of herself influences the way she perceives the world and the way she acts in reaction to her perceptions. Females in general and female adolescents in particular typically have much less positive views of themselves than do males in this society. This affects their abilities to form and achieve goals that are on the same level as their potentials. Therefore, much of their potential is wasted. When individuals do not feel good about themselves, the number and degree of their accomplishments decreases, which affects both the individuals and society in general. Thus, it would benefit females and people in general if females valued themselves more. What causes females to have poorer self-concepts than males? At what stage does their self-esteem decrease? Can the self-concepts of females be improved? If so, how? All of the answers to these questions have not been found but many of them apparently are couched in the way society views the female. This paper seeks to provide some of the answers to these questions through discussing self-concept and its development, and providing suggestions for improving the female self-concept.
