Council held by Inspector James McLaughlin with Uintah & White River Part 3

Inspector McLaughlin explains the Supreme Court decision and Congressional action that led to the creation of the Indian Appropriations Act. McLaughlin explains that the Indians will be given individual allotments and shared grazing grounds, but that they must either choose allotments today or accept those arbitrarily assigned to them. The council members reject McLaughlin's suggestions and claim they will not recognize the provisions of the new Act. Members of the council discuss a past meeting with President McKinley regarding the borders of the reservation, and in response, McLaughlin tries to convince the council that Roosevelt is as credible as McKinley. The council adjourns and reconvenes the next day to discuss how the Act will affect the reservation agency and the laws governing land inheritance under the Act
