Description |
The family Togaviridae contains three genera: Alphavirus, Rubivirus, and Pestivirus. There are no species of Pestivirus that are pathogenic for humans, and they are not discussed further in this chapter. Alphaviruses, however, are an important cause of arthropod-borne encephalitis in humans, and the genus Rubivirus contains a single virus, the rubella virus, that is the agent that causes rubella, a systemic disease that may have significant neurologic and ophthalmologic manifestations. |
