Health Sciences Report University of Utah ETHICS OF ANIMAL RESEARCH Spring 1985 Dr. Jane Kercher places an intravenous line in the ear of a pig prior to surgery. At left, she delivers leiser energy through an endoscope to vaporize plaque in the pig's abdominal arteries. Plaque is caused by atherosclerosis, the leading cause of death in America and a major cause of disability, often necessitating leg amputation. Dr. Kercher, a third- year surgical resident, is working with Dr. Peter Lawrence, associate professor of surgery, to develop new techniques to remove arterial plaque in peripheral arects of the body. Data obtained from his studies over the last seven years soon will be used to treat human patients with peripheral vascular plaque.
