Title OCT for Ophthalmology: Origins and Future Directions
Creator James G. Fujimoto, PhD
Affiliation Cambridge, Massachusetts
Subject Optical Coherence Tomography
Description Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was developed in 1991 and is rapidly gaining acceptance as a diagnostic imaging tool in ophthalmology.[1, 2] OCT operates analogously to ultrasound B mode imaging, except that it generates high resolution images by measuring the echo time delay of reflected light rather than sound. In ophthalmology, OCT enables non-contact, high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging of the retina and anterior eye.
