Description |
The predominant tumor cell in patients with multiple myeloma is a bone marrow-based, B-cell derived, plasma cell. Patients with multiple myeloma may develop symptoms and signs from the direct effects of the proliferation of these cells within the bone marrow, from the effects of substances secreted by these cells, from infiltration by these cells of soft tissues including the brain parenchyma (which, in turn, produces masses of tumor cells called plasmacytomas), and from secondary metabolic and immunologic effects of the disease. |
