Title Interaction of Color Example 20 (Free Studies)
Description A double interaction between two dimmed tones of red and green combines two contrasting effects, an after image with its opposite, an optical mixture. Whereas the more frequent and even subdivision of the outer areas tends toward a grayed-down optical mixture, the after image occurs in the elliptical center, where the green ground, after a figure ground exchange, shows a larger broadening of the reds. The numerical reduction of stripes in the center consequently produces a clear increase in both light and color for the green, but a gain only in color, with a loss in light, for the red. All of this results in a subtle change in posture, from an outer soft flatness to a central emphasis of direction. Both are reversed by a strong figure ground change through the horizontal center line.
