Description |
The order Actinomycetales contains three families of bacteria that resemble fungi in their appearance and, to some extent, in the diseases they cause: (a) Mycobacteriaceae (genus: Mycobacterium), (b) Actinomycetaceae (genera: Actinomyces, Tropheryma), and (c) Nocardiaceae (genus: Nocardia). The bacteria in this order, often called ""higher bacteria,"" are important causes of systemic and CNS disease. As such, they are also important causes of neuro-ophthalmologic symptoms and signs. |
