"From September 30 through October 28, seven focus groups were conducted for the University of Utah Public Relations Office. The objective of the discussion was to better understand the perceptions about the University of Utah by minority students. Specifically, we wanted to identify some of the obstacles and opportunities that exist in relationship to a college education, particularly at the University of Utah. We also wanted to determine the most effective methods of communication, once we understood better when and how educational decisions are made." Summary of important findings: o Higher education is expensive and cost is viewed as a barrier o-Students start thinking seriously about attending college in Junior high or high school, beginning in the seventh grade o On-campus introductory programs which give young people experiences in the university setting are excellent in attracting students o Minority students are not well informed about the application process, the availability of financial aid or scholarships, and do not feel encouraged or informed about higher education by high school or junior high school teachers or counselors |
