Description Babesia is a protozoan within the class Sporozoa that parasitizes erythrocytes of wild and domestic animals. It was first described in animals by Babes in 1888. There are 99 species worldwide in the genus, with some species infecting a wide range of hosts. Four strains of BabesiaB. microti, B. divergens, WA-1, and MO-1cause disease in humans, but other species occasionally are implicated in sporadic cases of human disease.
