Brucellae are facultative intracellular, aerobic, gram-negative bacilli that can enter the body via mucous membranes, abraded skin, or inhalation. They are nonmotile and nonspore-forming. There are six recognized species of Brucellae, the most important of which from the standpoint of human disease are B. abortus (eight biovars), B. melitensis, and B. suis. |
