In 1857 General Albert Sidney Johnston (1803-1862) was sent to oversee 2500 troops escorting new federal officials to Utah during a tense time between the Mormons and the federal government known as the Utah War. He established Camp Floyd in Utah County in 1858, but left the army to join the Confederacy in 1860. |
