Show A studio photograph of Mary Edith Newitt Smith. In this photograph she is standing. She was the 1st superintendent of St. Mark's Hospital and was appointed in 1894 at the age of 23. She is wearing her nursing uniform complete with her nursing cap and her hair is pulled upon her head. The apron and skirt of her uniform is light colored; however, her blouse is a darker color and is patterned. A dark colored Maltese cross with a chain and key is attached to her waistband. A pair of scissors is also stuffed into the waistband. The background is whitewashed creating Mary Smith as the focal point of the photograph. |

"Mary Edith Newitt Smith" has been penciled in twice; horizontally on the top border and vertically on the right hand side. Penciled in the middle is, "1st Superintendent of St. Mark's Hospital". There is another penciled comment that is harder to interpret, "L. Newitt [?]" There is no year acknowledgement of when photograph was taken. The condition of the photograph is good. It is rectangular without a mat. The back of the photograph reveals that it has likely been torn from a page of a photograph album. There are remnants of black and tan cardboard paper glued to the back of the photograph. |
