The American Academy of Neurology Held Its First-Ever Virtual Meeting April 17-22, 2021

Digre, MD Meagan Seay, DO The American Academy of Neurology Held Its First-Ever Virtual Meeting April 17–22, 2021 T he American Academy of Neurology (AAN) hosted its first virtual annual meeting April 17–22, 2021. Although the meeting was greatly pared down, NeuroOphthalmology was well-represented. We started out with Dr. Nancy Newman and Dr. Valérie Biousse reviewing both afferent and efferent disorders in neuroophthalmology. Although their traditional course is an entire day, in 2 hours they covered must-know topics in a case-based format. Dr. Terry Fife covered neurootology in an hour. Two additional on-demand courses were the ever-popular Drs. Eggenberger and Cornblath’s Now You See It Now You Know It: Pathognomonic Neuro-ophthalmology Examination Findings and a new course spearheaded by Dr. Marc Dinkin on Ophthalmic Imaging for Neurologists: optical coherence tomography and Funduscopy in the 21st Century. Courses that may interest neuro-ophthalmologists included autoimmune neurology, movement disorders, headache medicine, and others. In addition, there were sessions that would appeal to many of us, highlighting the use of telemedicine, COVID and neurology, diversity equity and inclusion lectures, and practical coding sessions. Many scientific posters of neuro-ophthalmologic interest were represented, including an Abstract of Distinction Award given to Dr. Newman and colleagues’ work comparing the results of the recent e394 gene therapy trials for Leber hereditary optic neuropathy to natural history studies. The Neuro-ophthalmology/Neuro-otology Section had a poster session emphasizing work done in our field—including reactivation of neuromyelitis optica after COVID infection, genetic analysis of neuro-sarcoidosis, errors in diagnosis in papilledema. The highlight of the meeting was Dr. Steve Galetta’s inspiring talk, Where’s the vision? The Importance of Visual Outcomes in Neurological Disease—delivering the prestigious H. Houston Merritt Lecture at the 2021 AAN meeting. We are all looking forward to next year’s meeting to be held in person and with more neuro-ophthalmology courses and scientific sessions from April 2–8, 2022 in Seattle. Kathleen B.
