Show This photograph is a group photo of a man, women, and children. The man in the photograph is wearing a three-piece suit with a light shirt. The women in the photograph are dressed in various styles, mainly consisting of dark dresses and hats. The girls are wearing light or dark dresses and hats. The boys are wearing shirts, pants and jackets of varying styles. Part of the group is sitting on some low benches, and in the front four girls are sitting in desk-like chairs. The group is standing in front of a building, with a door behind them and a window on the right side of the photograph. The building appears to have been built from adobe or cement. |

This photograph is in generally good condition, except for worn corners and some areas of fading. The border has some spots on the lower left hand side and is dirty. The original photograph is attached to a cardboard backing. On the back of the photograph at the top the following information is handwritten in pencil: "M.A. Pendleton, 345 East 3rd South, Salt Lake City." In the middle of the back of the photograph the following information is handwritten in pencil, "I think this group is associated with First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City, RD." (R. Douglas Brackenridge). There is a stamp of a scroll in the middle of the back of the photograph, and printed within the stamp is, "Taken at the gallery of J. H. Crockwell agent for copying and enlarging pictures. Address Box 280, Salt Lake City." "James H. Crockwell came to SLC about 1863-64 with his family. He and a brother learned photography about 1883. He was in business by himself about 1889. Traveled and shot various places in the west. By 1893 he was Utah's photographer at the Chicago World's Fair. Business was a struggle and family problems complicate life; he quite photography about 1899-1900 to become a traveling salesman. In the late 30's he lived with a daughter in Calif., and died in 1940." This information about Crockwell was provided by Karen Hendry, Westminster College, Nov. 7, 2005 |
