Title |
Correspondence subsequent to a speech by Marriner S. Eccles given at meeting of National Industrial Conference Board, on November 28, 1940 [2] |
Description |
Scan of letters to Federal Reserve Chairman Marriner S. Eccles or his staff following his giving a speech at a meeting of National Industrial Conference Board held in New York City on November 28, 1940. Some of the letters were simple requests for copies of the speech, while others included substantial comments on the details of the speech, and to these, Chairman Eccles sometimes responded with further details. A major theme was a $2.5 billion loan to the British government to support their defense during World War II, highlighted in press coverage of the speech, and public opinion was divided as to the wisdom of this. Such letters prompted Eccles' office to send copies of the speech so as to counteract "garbled reports" of the press. |
