Description Poxviridae, the pox viruses, are a complex group of viruses whose classification is based primarily on the morphology of the virion and the viral nucleic acid. The family contains two subfamilies. One is composed of viruses that infect insects and the other, Chordopoxviridae, is composed of viruses that infect vertebrates. The latter subfamily is composed of six different genera, each of which contains several species, but the only vertebrate pox viruses of neuro-ophthalmologic significance are members of the genus Orthopoxvirus: vaccinia and variola.
