Description The viruses in the family Orthomyxoviridae were once grouped together with several other viruses, including the mumps and measles viruses, in a single family, Myxoviridae. The name ""myxovirus"" was chosen to denote the unique affinity of some of these viruses for glycoproteins (from the Greek myxa, meaning ""mucous""). The myxoviruses subsequently were separated into two families, the Orthomyxoviridae and the Paramyxoviridae, on the basis of morphologic and genetic differences.
