OCR Text |
Show Elevated view of the North face of Foster Hall (positioned to the right), looking due south. A group of people have gathered on a lawn, underneath a stand of trees to the left side of the image and along the side of Foster Hall. Three more people stand above on a balcony. They are watching 18 women in light colored dresses dance around a May Pole (centered). A branch enters the picture at the lower right corner, and three black lines (power lines?) cross the image horizontally at the same level. In the distance, a parking lot with one car in it and 13th East are pictured. Beyond that are some densely planted trees and scattered residential buildings. There seems to be some fog or cloudiness; shadows appear faint, and fading in the distance the Wasatch Mountains can only just be made out. The rest of the image is in sharp detail. |
Further Information |
The photograph is in fair condition. There are signs of heavy handling. Scratches and splotches (fingerprints?) mark the front of the photograph, and the corners have some bending. In the white margin underneath the photograph, a caption is written in black ink stating: "May Pole -- Westminster Day". On the back side, imposed over a stamped, faded number "835," more black ink states "Return to Westminster College". Further writing in pencil says "#1027", "2½ x 4" (the dimensions of the photo), "100 [?]", and "[?] Sugarhouse [?]". Erected in 1926 during President Herbert W. Reherd's Administration, Foster Hall was built initially as a men's dormitory. Forster Hall was named after an old classmate of Reherd's from his college days, Robert Hubie Foster. Most contributions came from his family in Ottumwa, Iowa. The four story hall housed over a hundred students and for over thirty years it served as the men's dormitory until the erection of Hogle Hall in 1959 and Carleson Hall in 196 |
