Description Video recording of the 10th and 11th KUTV EXTRA episodes (color, sound, 59 minutes and 33 seconds), originally on U-Matic tape. They aired on October 19 and 26, 1977, and had a total of 7 segments. Timberjack Joe [0:00:00]: Producer Judy Hallet talks to Timberjack Joe, a modern-day mountain man who is a trail builder, trapper, tanner, and former Forest Service lumberjack. He lives in a house trailer near Dubois, Wyoming. Cedar City Power Problem [0:11:25]: Cedar City residents complain about the skyrocketing cost of electricity in the city and surrounding area. Some concerned citizens blame local politicians for relying on the California Pacific Power Company instead of creating its municipal system to distribute power from the Bureau of Reclamation. At Odds [0:24:30]: Rod Decker and Lynne Van Dam discuss opposing viewpoints on the Utah delegates to the International Women's Year (IWY) Conference in Houston, Texas. Although all of Utah's elected delegates opposed the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and espoused generally conservative values, the federally funded IWY Commission appointed its own Utah delegates, most of whom supported the ERA. While Decker argues that the IWY Commission disrespected the opposing viewpoints of the Utah women who elected the original conservative delegates, Van Dam argues that the conservative outcomes of Utah's July 1977 IWY Conference were not representative of Utah women because a small but vocal group of right-wing activists heavily influenced conference attendance and proceedings. Soldier Summit Speed Trap [0:30:00]: Police in Soldier Summit, Utah, issued many speeding tickets to drivers passing through the town. Paul Jacobs [0:37:32]: Journalist Paul Jacobs began investigating the danger of radiation caused by nuclear tests in southern Nevada in 1957. Convinced the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) had suppressed information about the dangers of radiation, Jacobs uncovered an uncanny cancer rate in communities in Nevada and Utah exposed to the fallout from the AEC tests before succumbing to cancer himself. This segment also features Nobel Prize laureate Dr. Linus Pauling. Jacobs died in January 1978, just a few months after this segment aired. Beverly Sills [0:50:32]: Judy Hallet interviews opera singer Beverly Sills about her career, the modern opera industry, her friendship with Maurice Abravanel, and her views on opportunities for American singers and regional opera companies such as the proposed Utah Opera Company, which was founded in 1978. At Odds [0:54:49]: President Jimmy Carter changed a Utah federal judge appointment from David Watkiss to Brigham Young University (BYU) law professor Monroe McKay due to his family and political ties. While Brenda Hancock argues that the situation is a perfect example of "politics as usual" in which congressional patronage triumphs over supposed reform, Rod Decker maintains that the original selection of Watkiss by the Utah Bar Commission had been equally politically motivated and that McKay is qualified for the position.
