Sioux awl case dating 1900; long, narrow, and conical in form; leather substrate has been dyed a brick red color; thong fringes and top loop have faded, but the brick red coloration is still apparent. Beading covers the entire length of the case and is worked in a continuous bead wrap; a strand of beads is wrapped around the conical substrate and intermittintly anchored; each color change occurs seamlessly as new beads are added. Stripes of red and black are worked on a white field; near the; top, the background color shifts to pink, with a turquoise band in the center and a black border at the top. A trapezoidal flap with a pair of fringes anchored its hem is attached with a leather thong at the top of the case. The flap is beaded in lane stitch echoing the red, pink, turquoise and balck bands at the top of the case. A red, black, and white cross decorates the top of the flap; fringe is attached the base of the case.. Width 2.5, Length 36 Centimeters |
