Sioux awl case and awl dating 1920; hard, slender conical form with beaded and fringed pendent at base; beige leather substrate and leather thong loop, and fringe. Beadwork covers entire case as well as pendent at base; wrapped continuous beading intermittently anchored; horizontal striped pattern of dark blue, white, and turquoise on a pink field; within one white stripe, a series of turquoise and black forms appear; pink beads are particularly small in scale. Color changes occur seamlessly as; each new set of beads is added. At the base of the case where the beaded pendent is attached, the continuous beads have slipped a bit, leaving them loose, but still attached. Leather thong is securely attached near the top of the case, and fringe at the bottom is adorned with tin cones. The awl is a curved, sharp, steel implement hafted onto a wooden handle with sinew or leather.. Width 2.25, Length 34.5 Centimeters |
