| Description |
Cottonwood Lane at 5340 South is an important node in the valley irrigation and storm water system. There, water from the Jordan and Salt Lake Canal can be dumped into Big Cottonwood Creek. Built in 1898 and called the ""Big Spill"", the transfer point enables the Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities to move irrigation water into Big Cottonwood Creek to fulfill exchange agreements with irrigators west of the canal. During periods of high storm runoff, the canal also can carry storm water and dump it into Big Cottonwood Creek, maximizing space in available water conveyances in order to lessen the chance of flooding. |
