Show This post card photograph depicts Miss Sarah Louisa Conklin standing alone in a field of tall grass against a wall of rose bushes. Conklin wears a stripped light colored button downed blouse, and a dark skirt. She wears her hair pulled atop of her head in a bun. Her hands are clasped together in front of her at waist level and she looks directly at the camera. |

This photograph is in fair condition. It is lightly soiled and there are pin holes on each of the four corners. Imprinted on the back, in black ink, is "Post Card," next to "AZO [encircling] Place Stamp Here" in the top right hand corner. The back is separated into two sections by two format headings. The heading on the left is "Correspondence," the heading on the right is "Address." All hand written marks in pencil include the following: "St. George? [,] G-3 [,] Conklin [,] 4 [circled] [,] 3 1/8 [circled] [,] Presby [sic] [,] DT [?] [,] 4[,] NM18." In pen: "Miss Conklin." Stamped: "INTAGLIO COPY [,] Job [,] Page [,] No." Sarah Louisa Conklin came to St. George in 1913 as a Presbyterian schoolteacher and missionary. Conklin melded into the Mormon community by teaching large classes in her school and administering aid to those who were sick or in need of comfort alongside the Mormon Relief Society. She retired from teaching and missionary service in 1933 and continued to serve the community until her death in 1949. Presbyterian work ceased in the St. George community for twenty years as a result of her death. |
