The following pages describe my experience in the University of Utah's Master of Fine Arts graduate program in ceramics. The technical aspects are not the main focus. The focus is on the symbolism, ritual and ceremony of the installation, "Ritual - Ceremony - Immortality."The challenge was to search for the ways and means to express the concept of ancestor worship, combining my art, technical skills, experiences and life. In order for me to achieve these goals, I used symbols and metaphors to represent my ancestors as well as recognized elements of my culture and knowledge. The ideas and inspirations for the installation came from Buddhist teachings about ancestor worship. The other objects in the installation as well as personal inspiration were taken from nature. The installation is presented in a way that allows the viewer to take their time in observing and contemplating the objects lying in and along a meandering gravel pathway, or a flowing river. |
