Description
Maria Garcia discusses growing up in Salt Lake City, and making it a priority to learn and practice Spanish even though speaking Spanish resulted in punishment at school. She talks about her family background in the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and New Mexico. She talks about her family working on farms, and discrimination that she faced in school. Her family had a tradition of camping together on the weekends. She discusses attending the University of Utah and her awareness of the Chicano movement. After graduating from the University of Utah she became involved with youth services and became the executive director of Youth Works.
