About the Artist |
Karel Appel was born in Amsterdam on April 25th 1921. As a young artist he was influenced by Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass and later by Comte de Lautréamont's The Songs of Maldoror and the teachings of Krishnamurti. Studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Amsterdam. In 1946 he visited Denmark, where he met the Danish painters who will later become members of the Cobra group. On May 3rd, 2006 Appel died at his home in Zürich. |
