Subject Infectious Diseases; Bacteria; Gram-Negative Bacilli; Bartonella
Description Bartonella species are small, plemorphic gram-negative rods originally assigned to the order Rickettsiales but, subsequently, reclassified on the basis of nucleic acid sequencing to the alpha-2 subgroup of the alpha-proteobacteria. These same data revealed a high level similarity between Bartonella and Rochalimaea species, leading to their unification, withretention of the name Bartonella, which had nomenclatural priority.
