Show A studio portrait of Reverend Duncan James McMillan a prominent Presbyterian minister and missionary who came to the Utah frontier in the mid-1870s. The upper torso and head shot features McMillan dressed in a buttoned up double breasted dark suit coat and a light colored shirt with a light colored tie around his neck. McMillan's hair is combed to one side and he wears a thick moustache. His head is turned and tilted looking away from the camera. The background is faded leaving McMillan the central focal point of the photograph. |

The photograph is rectangular and in excellent condition. The front of the photograph has, "D.J.McMillan" written in ink in the upper left hand corner. On the bottom is the emblem of the photography studio who took the photograph. The back also bears the photograph studio's emblem in greater and grandeur detail. Reverend Duncan James McMillan had a major influence in founding Westminster College. A protégé of Sheldon Jackson, he came to the Salt Lake Valley to find refuge from his bronchial condition and to establish a proselytizing mission to convert Mormons in March of 1875. However, McMillan soon turned his efforts to education when his proselytizing efforts towards Mormons proved futile. He founded what later became Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah, on April 19, 1875 and opened a number of schools in northern and southern Utah.
