Title I hope to God we all stay alive 09
Creator Sydney Porter Williams
Description A child's dress is hung on the wall- it is pink and trimmed with lace. Beside it are two pieces of stationary. The format of these letters is consistent with the other pieces of this installation. On top, a letter written to the artist filled with love and gratitude; underneath, a personal journal reflecting on grief and loss of life. This piece was displayed in the 2024 exhibition "Selfographies". / "When confronted with overwhelming loss of human life, our ability to comprehend numbers slips away. Massive death counts become meaningless. This work provides opportunity to seek understanding of grave statistics through connection with another's history. When asked ‘what is your dream?' in 2021, a young girl in Palestine said, "I hope to God we all stay alive." Since October 7, 2023 alone, over 11,000 Palestinian children in her region have been killed. Many Israeli children have also lost their lives during this time. Each number signifies a cherished life; not only someone's child, sibling, or friend, but a self who dreamed of the future. Some were even too young for this. I hope to God we all stay alive invites you to mourn these deaths, while imploring you to fight for the dreams, hopes, and futures of the living. " Statement from the artist.
