Civil Defense Radiation Monitoring Training

Dale Snyder, from Bangor, Michigan, was one of 18 youths from the Clear Creek Job Corps Center near Carson City, Nevada, who participated in radiation monitoring practice in a low level radiation field at the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission's Nevada Test Site. The object Snyder is monitoring is one of the remaining braces that guyed a 500-foot tower from which a 29-kiloton nuclear device was detonated in 1955. Snyder and the other Job Corps youths had just completed a 16-hour training course in civil defense radiation monitoring. Among the workers is Gordon Purcell, 18, from Vernal.
