| Description |
View of Galena Gulch in Bingham where first ore was discovered in 1863. Image shows the Old Jordan, which formed the nucleus of what was later the U.S. Mining Refining and Smelting Company. Gold, silver, lead, and then copper were mined in Bingham. General Patrick Conner's men from Fort Douglas actually staked the first claim in the canyon. At its peak, Bingham was seven miles long but less than a city block wide. The town was unincorporated in 1971 and demolished to make way for further mining development. |
