Show An eastside view of Foster Hall in 1935. The perimeter of the hall is dominated with shrubs and trees. These shrubs and trees are very large and obscure a lot of the hall, especially near the entrance. Vines can also be seen growing on the face wall of the hall. These vines weave themselves around windows and pipe drains. The foreground is dominated by grass and a walkway leading to the entry way of the hall. Scattered groups of people can be seen sitting on the lawn and standing near the entrance. The photograph has an uneven white border encompassing it. The white border is wide on the sides and narrow on the top and bottom. |
Further Information |
This photograph is in good condition. There are a few creases and dirt marks visible on the back. The only handwritten mark is on the front along the bottom white border. It reads, "Foster Hall - Boy's Dormitory - 1935." Erected in 1926 during President Herbert W. Reherd's administration, Foster Hall was built initially as a men's dormitory. Foster Hall was named after an old classmate of Reherd's from his college days, Robert Hubie Foster. Most of contributions came from his family in Ottumwa, Iowa. The four story hall housed over a hundred students and for over thirty years it served as the men's dormitory until the erection of Hogle Hall in 1959 and Carleson Hall in 1962. With introduction of the new dormitories Foster was primarily used the same as it used today, for classroom and offices. Many renovation plans were made over the years, but the crowning renovation that serves the hall to this day was made possible by Berenice Bradshaw in 1991.
