The Dr. patched him up as well as he could. After Willis and Tewksbury returned from Utah I heard the Dr say that Joe Wilson was the worst shot up man he ever saw, to get well without the services of a surgeon for over a month after he was shot. I also heard the Dr. tell the story of the shooting as the Wilsons had told it to him and Willls which is as follows: In August 1880 Joe Wilson and his brother was herding cattle near La Sal Mt. the brother was out riding after stock one day leaving Joe in camp when a band of Utes rode up and opened fire on Joe , and after robbing the camp left Joe. Thinking he was dead Joe's brotlior returned to camp shortly afterward, and went on to Moab and got help, and returned, and moved Joe to Moab, where Dr. Tewksbury about a month later, patched him up as best he could. Joe being shot through the foot and knee, and through the left hand, through the bridge of the nose, and one eye shot away. About 4 years after the shooting I got acquainted with Joe Wilson and he told me substantially the same that I had heard Dr Tewksbury tell sometime before. Yours Truly, Hugo Weston |
