Description |
Aerial view of the rapid at mile 232.4 showing how the main current drives onto a nest of rocks at flows of under 8000 cfs. At volumes above this figure, the current moves toward mid-river. This picture was taken on October 4, 1958 when the Grand Canyon gauge read 6550 cfs. The reading on October 3 was 6900 cfs. and a volume in this range would require about 24 hours to travel the 145 miles from Grand Canyon gauge to this point. The probable flow on which the Hyde couple died met the conditions shown. Photo by: P.T. Reilly, taken 10-4-1958. Gift of P.T. Reilly. |
