Guide to the David Stanley Westminster College faculty member's papers

David Stanley was born in 1942. He received a B.A. from Princeton University in 1964. From 1964-1966, he was a Peace Corps volunteer in India and from 1972-1973 a Fulbright scholar in Japan. Stanley received both an M.A. and Ph.D. from University of Texas, Austin.

Stanley taught in the English Department of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah from 1991-2008. While at Westminster, he taught American, Asian, and Native American literatures, in addition to folklore and environmental studies. During fall semester 2007, he taught American studies in Budapest, Hungary on a Fulbright fellowship.

David Stanley co-edited a collection of essays entitled Cowboy poets & cowboy poetry (University of Illinois Press, 2000) and produced a Smithsonian Folkways CD entitled Cowboy poetry classics (2003). He edited Folklore in Utah : a history and guide to resources (Utah State University Press, 2004).

This collection consists of the office papers of David Stanley, a faculty member at Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. Upon his retirement in 2008, he gave this portion of his papers to the Giovale Library archives.

Box 1, Folder 1 (Articles) includes a photocopy of an article by Barre Toelken entitled "The folklore of academe" and another by Ronald L. Baker entitled "The folklore of students".

Box 1, Folder 7 (Newspaper clippings) are primarily from Westminster newspapers, including Campus news and The Forum.

Box 1, Folder 9 (Photographs) comprise color prints and negatives, mostly of the Westminster campus, including construction of the Giovale Library, and the pottery studio on campus, housed in the Dolores Doré Eccles Ceramic Center.

Box 1, Folder 14 (Stanley article and poem) comprises an article entitled "Folklore and Westminster College" by David Stanley published in the Winter 1996 issue of Westminster review, and a poem he wrote about renaming "Westminnie" from "College" to "University".
