Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-David Stanley was born in 1942. He received a B.A. from Princeton University in 1964. From 1964-1966, he was a Peace Corps volunteer in India and from 1972-1973 a Fulbright scholar in Japan. Stanley received both an M.A. and Ph.D. from University of Texas, Austin. Stanley taught in the English Department of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah from 1991-2008. While at Westminster, he taught American, Asian, and Native American literatures, in addition to folklore and environmental studies. During fall semester 2007, he taught American studies in Budapest, Hungary on a Fulbright fellowship. His areas of experience include:
David Stanley co-edited a collection of essays entitled Cowboy poets & cowboy poetry (University of Illinois Press, 2000) and produced a Smithsonian Folkways CD entitled Cowboy poetry classics (2003). Content Description +/-This collection consists of case files of student folklore projects created between 1992-1999 for courses taught by David Stanley, a faculty member at Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. The case files document urban folklore related to Westminster College and the Sugar House area of Salt Lake City researched by Professor David Stanley's students. This series includes biographical sketches, diagrams and plans of houses and neighborhoods, final reports, handwritten notes, letters, photocopies of related articles, photographs, postcards, recorded interviews (audio and video tapes, CDs, DVDs, and transcripts), release forms, sketches, and surveys. Between 1991-2008, Stanley taught six or eight folklore classes, mostly during May Term, and asked students to collect examples of folklore from their families, friends, and neighborhoods. These materials became the basis of a modest archive in Dr. Stanley's office. Upon his retirement, general folklore materials were housed at the Fife Folklore Archives at Utah State University. Materials pertinent to Westminster and the Sugar House area were placed in the Westminster archives. They include supernatural legends, student traditions, pranks, narratives about professors and administrators, and the history and traditions of Allen Park located on the east side of 1300 East and across from the Westminster campus.
