Show A group photograph of a sophomore class of Wasatch Academy. The group of young men and women pose outside against a light colored brick structure (probably the Academy building itself). The group stands in a non-uniform three row formation. The sparse back and second rows are standing while the front row sits in semi-dark wooden chairs. The students are wearing a variety of dark and light colored clothing which consists of dresses, skirts, blouses, sweaters, suit coats, ties, pants, shirts, overcoats etc. To the very left is the entry way to the building. The window above the door has "Wasatch Academy" painted on it. The doors are light colored wood and a light colored wooden pillar is also visible to the right of the door. There are two vaulted windows built into the brick wall the students pose in front of. The window on the right is open at the top. And the ground the group is standing on is covered with snow which dominates the foreground of the photograph. |
Further Information |
The photograph is in fair condition. There is a major blemish in the quality of the photograph; it was overexposed to the light during development. The glare starts at the top left hand corner of the photograph and spreads to the center. Two air bubbles appear aside one another next to the vaulted window on the left. Directly right of the two air bubbles are two blue pen dots. There are three places where the edges have torn: the first two are on the left hand edge near the center about an inch apart from one another. The other is a small tear at the right hand edge. A pinhole is visible in the top border at the very center. Written on the back, in blue ink, is the following: "Sophomore Class [,] Cut No. 20. No. 1." In pencil is written: "Sophomore [faded] 4 ½ X 7 ½ Wasatch." Wasatch Academy was founded on April 19, 1875 by the Reverend Duncan James McMillan whom also had a major influence in founding Westminster College. A protégé of Sheldon Jackson, he came to the Salt Lake Valley in March of 1875 to find refuge from his bronchial condition and to establish a proselytizing mission to convert Mormons. However, McMillan soon turned his efforts to education when his proselytizing efforts towards the Mormons proved futile. He then founded Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah and opened a number of subsequent schools of the same nature in northern and southern Utah. |
