Additional Information |
The Animas Canal, Reservoir, Water, Power and Investment Company was incorporated in 1902 for the purpose of building a hydroelectric power plant and supplying power to the mines in the Silverton mining district. The company was reorganized as the Animas Power and Water Company in 1905, and the first power was produced in May 1906. It later became part of the Western Colorado Power Company (organized in 1913). Its facilities included: Terminal Dam (created Electra Lake and stood from 1906 to 1980); Power Flume no. 1 (delivered water from Electra to Forebay Lake); Forebay Lake; the penstock (enclosed water pipe) that delivered water down a nearly 1,000-foot drop; the Tacoma Powerhouse by the Animas River, which housed the generators; and a 44,000-volt transmission line to a substation at Silverton. |
