Description |
The site for COMMUNITY. LIVE. WORK. LIFE. is located at the corner of Rio Grande Street and 300 South in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. It is situated in a neighborhood that will likely see tremendous growth over the next twenty years due to it being bordered on the north by a major shopping district, The Gateway, and to the east by the main business district of the city. The neighborhood was recently selected as the home of the primary intermodal public transportation hub of Salt Lake City which connects the UTA bus system, TRAX light-rail system and the newly completed Frontrunner passenger train system. The neighborhood, whose keystone building is the Rio Grand train depot, is comprised of many historic buildings as well as light industrial buildings and warehouses. Unfortunately, many of these buildings have fallen into disrepair and the area is currently recognized as being home to a shelter and soup kitchen. A master plan of the neighborhood was completed by the author and two other graduate students, Mical Braken and Kristian Kallaker. The plan looked at ways to update and increase the density of the area's urban fabric while creating a sense of cohesion within the community. The desired outcome was that the area would become attractractive and compatible for families, professionals and current residents as a place to live and work. |
