A pragmatic politician: FDR in 1932

Because the pragmatic philosophy is not uncommon to American society - in fact one might say that it enjoys a good deal of favor in modern America - and also because it is especially adaptable to the type of philosophy a person engaged in politics necessarily must have in order to reconcile his actions with his belies, it is not startling to hear that Franklin Roosevelt has often been termed a "pragmatic politician." The very fact that FDR was such a successful politician suggests that he was also a successful pragmatist. But before launching into an investigation of one of Roosevelt's many historic political endeavors, it would be well to look at the principles of pragmatic philosophy in method and theory.
