Show This photograph is an overhead view of the inside of Payne Gymnasium. The wood floor is bare, smooth, and shiny. It reflects the lights of the ceiling. Several basketball courts are painted on the floor, and several basketball hoops accompany them. At the center of the gym two concentric circles with a 'W' in the middle are painted. The far wall has brick ascending halfway up it, and there is a wooden divider bisecting it. A door is to the right of the divider. At the back of the room, there are more doors, as well as some sound absorbing carpet and some water fountains hung on the wall. One of the back doors is open, and two people are standing on the threshold. |
Further Information |
Part of the left margin is missing, otherwise the photograph is in excellent condition. There is a white border around the image. On the back of the photo, written in black ink, appears the numbers "7" (encircled) and "1 ½ col x 3". With financial support from Frank Russell Payne, president of the board of trustees at Westminster College and manager of the local J.C. Penny Company, the college broke ground on the $55,000 gymnasium on July 17, 1928. Dedicated on January 11, 1929, it was named the Frank Russell Payne Gymnasium in honor of its primary donor. The new facility was used not only by a grateful Westminster student body, but also by a variety of teams and clubs from the Sugar House area. For information on F.R.
